The electric matcha whisk: a practical guide

A rechargeable electric whisk turns a 2-minute ritual into a 20-second one. Used well, it gives a smooth, foamy drink every time — here is how.

What an electric matcha whisk is

It is a small handheld frother: a motor in the handle spins a stainless steel coil (or, on some models, a bamboo-style head) at high speed. Modern versions charge over USB-C, so there are no batteries to replace. It does not replace the bamboo chasen in a traditional bowl — our matcha whisk guide explains the differences in technique — but for lattes, iced drinks and busy mornings, it is a brilliant tool.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Use a tall container. A glass or a deep cup prevents splashes. Wide shallow bowls are for bamboo whisks.
  2. Add the matcha you already use (about 1–2 g) and a small splash of water at around 70–80 °C, just enough to cover the powder.
  3. Submerge the head before switching on. Always start with the coil under the surface, otherwise the powder flies.
  4. Hold at a slight angle and move gently up and down for 10–15 seconds until the paste is smooth and foamy.
  5. Switch off before lifting the head out of the liquid.
  6. Top up with hot water, warm milk or pour over ice and cold milk.

Lattes and iced matcha

This is where the electric whisk shines. You can froth the matcha shot, rinse the head, then froth warm milk in a second jug for a café-style latte. For iced drinks, whisk the shot with cold water, pour it over milk and ice, and enjoy the green cascade — our iced matcha latte with a matcha glass shows the full method.

Charging and battery

A full USB-C charge usually lasts several weeks of daily drinks. Charge it with the cap or head dry, and avoid leaving it in a wet sink area.

Cleaning in 10 seconds

Run the whisk for two seconds in a glass of clean warm water, then wipe the coil and let it air-dry. Never submerge the handle. If you own the version with a bamboo head, treat the bamboo exactly like a chasen: no soap, dry upright.

Is an electric whisk "cheating"?

Not at all — it is a different tool for a different moment. The bamboo whisk is about texture and ritual; the electric one is about speed and consistency. Many people use both. If you are deciding between them, read bamboo vs electric whisk.

Our electric whisk

Our lavender USB-C electric matcha whisk comes with or without a bamboo whisk, so you can have both worlds in one order. It sits with our bamboo models in the electric and bamboo matcha whisk collection.
