Matcha whisk FAQ: your questions, answered
Short, practical answers to the questions we receive most often about bamboo and electric whisks.

Before the questions
For the big picture — whisk types, how they work and how they compare — start with our overview of matcha whisk types. Below are the quick answers. If your question is about the gesture itself, how to whisk matcha covers the technique step by step.
The three rules that answer most questions
- Soak before use. One minute in warm water makes bamboo flexible.
- No soap, no dishwasher. Warm water is all a chasen needs.
- Dry upright on a holder. Open air, tines down, every time.
Follow these three and most problems — broken tines, closed shape, mould — simply do not happen. When you are ready to replace or upgrade, our matcha whisk collection has bamboo and electric models.
Quick answers
Do I need to soak a new matcha whisk before the first use?
Yes. Soak the tines in warm water for one to two minutes before the first use, and for about a minute before every use. Dry bamboo is brittle; soaked bamboo bends.
Why does my new chasen look closed or squashed?
Whisks are often shipped tightly packed. Soak it in warm water: the tines relax and open into a bell. Then dry it on a holder to keep that shape.
How long does a bamboo matcha whisk last?
With daily use and good drying, usually three to six months. Replace it when many tines are broken, the bell no longer opens or it smells musty.
Is it normal for a few tines to break?
Yes, a few broken tines over weeks of use are normal wear. Many breaks early on usually mean the whisk was used dry.
Can I wash my whisk with soap or in the dishwasher?
No. Bamboo absorbs soap and the dishwasher's heat splits it. Rinse in warm water and let it air-dry upright.
What are the dark spots on my whisk?
Most often mould, caused by drying in a closed space. If spots do not rinse off, replace the whisk and dry the new one on a holder in open air.
Can I use a metal kitchen whisk instead?
You can, but results are poor: metal wires are too stiff and too few to create fine foam, and they can scratch a ceramic bowl.
Is a milk frother the same as an electric matcha whisk?
They work the same way. A dedicated electric matcha whisk is usually sized for a glass or bowl and easier to clean, but the principle — a fast-spinning coil — is identical.
How many tines should my first whisk have?
A classic 70–80-tine chasen is the most forgiving for beginners. Move to 100 tines if you want a creamier foam.
Does Léo Matcha sell matcha powder to go with the whisk?
No, we sell accessories only. Our whisks work with whichever matcha you already enjoy.
